James Fletcher was kind enough to take some time to answer a series of questions on finding work to help the unemployed in our online community. The following is what he had to say on Breaking into the Industry and Career Path.
Question: What is the best way to break into a role?
Networking is still the best way. It is always nice when someone comes to me with the resume of an ex-colleague saying that they know the person and would vouch for him.
Note that I receive several resumes from very talented people I have never heard about. In my opinion this is not proper networking. I really cannot screen all of them. So, unless the resume comes from someone I trust, I just refer the candidate to our website.
That is why it is important to make real connections before sending your resume around. Join professional organizations, have lunch with people from different areas in your company, attend conferences, do the best you can to get to know people who can connect you to others.
Question: What is the career path for this position – are there advancement opportunities?
Opportunities working in Strategy are endless. Strategy Managers have a broad scope. They can support the development of new products, contribute to brand/marketing strategy, coordinate supply chain initiatives, deal with international trading, roll out a specific strategy in a different country, work in a M&A project, and many others.
Consequently, people in my group are considered important assets that can become leaders in different areas of the organization.
