James Fletcher was kind enough to take some time to answer a series of questions on finding work to help the unemployed in our online community. The following is what he had to say on Life in a Strategy Role.
Question: What is the schedule like for modern professionals in this industry (9-5, work from home, etc)?
Telecommuting is a reality in my team. Our projects take place all over the world. In fact, it is very hard to find me in the office. Due to this huge geographic dispersion we don’t have a regular 9-5 schedule. I may have meetings at 11PM to talk to partners in China, or at 11AM to talk to someone in South America.
I try to hire people that are good enough so we don’t have to micromanage anyone. They have their projects and their deadlines. So, my team keeps me posted of what they are doing and knows they have to deliver. However, I really motivate everyone to maintain a regular schedule so they can have a balanced personal and business life.
Question: What is the biggest frustration with the position?
I believe one of the key frustrations in this position is that although we may be out of the office, or even on vacation, our minds are always on the clock. The amount of information we handle on a daily basis is overwhelming, and the worst part is that it changes every second. So, we are always following the news, evaluating trends to understand the behavior of a particular market, thinking about what the suppliers are doing, paying attention on changes in the law, taxes, unions, inflation, etc. Sometimes it is very difficult to disconnect and enjoy. So, sometimes it is hard to balance personal life and business life.
