You must be a registered buyer on the Ariba Network (AN) to search for public supplier profiles. To search for a specific supplier, within your AN Buyer account, navigate to:
Supplier Enablement Tab>Manage Vendors>Search for Suppliers and then enter whatever detail you know of the supplier (Name, ANID, Address, Country, ect)
If you're generally searching for a supplier (not a specific supplier in mind), you can follow the same path above and rather than searching by address, search by commodity description, territory, or minority information.
Click "Search" and the results of the qualified suppliers will return on the bottom of the screen.
If you click on the supplier's name, you can see details regarding their public profile.
I agree that you need to be a registered Buyer. But still if you want to search for a supplier and want to see whether they have a profile on Ariba then just google for it as like "Honeywell Ariba profile". It shows you some links where you can see some data about the supplier profile on Ariba network but very less data which the supplier has decided to make it public.
Why not to use Ariba Discovery for this purpose - it is free and shows the transaction volume of the supplier on AN. On the other hand, Google also brings info from Ariba Discovery quite high in the search result. :-)

You're right ... Ariba Discovery is a great resource to do an initial check for suppliers who are on the Ariba Network.
